New River Community College professor named as Early Childhood Champion awardee

Bonnie Graham is an early childhood education professor at New River Community College in Roanoke, Va., and she's just been named an Early Childhood Champion.

That's a distinction the Community Foundation of the New River Valley bestows on "one early childhood champion of the year, one runner-up, and three honorees," per a press release.

Graham, who's taught in the school's early childhood education program for more than 20 years, is one of five people to receive the honor this year.

She's one of five people in the state to receive the award, which is given to those who have made a significant contribution to early childhood education.

Among Graham's contributions: the development of the micro flotation process for separating fine particles from coal dust, which the coal industry considers one of the best technologies for separating fine particles, the press release notes.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech professorRoe-Hoan Yoon has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.

Zhang and his team have received a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a technology that uses light instead of electrons to turn devices on and off, the Roanoke Times reports.
